Upstream is the go-to source for coverage of oil, gas and the energy sector's efforts to confront manmade climate change while delivering the energy that people and industries require.
Upstream provides exclusive insight into global oil and gas companies' exploration and production, and we have expanded and improved our coverage of the sector's low carbon energy projects - from decarbonisation of energy and industry operations to new hydrogen, carbon capture and offshore wind projects.
We are searching for a standout journalist to join our global news team as a China Energy Correspondent.
Upstream's preference is to hire an expat journalist with strong fluency in both English and Mandarin languages who is willing and able to work in our Shanghai office as an accredited foreign journalist in China.
Alternatively, we may also consider basing the China Energy Correspondent in our Singapore office, while the journalist would travel to China occasionally on company-funded reporting trips, as needed.
Your strategic role:
The Shanghai based China Energy Correspondent will report and write about companies involved in China oil and gas, exploration and production, field development, LNG, and CCS. The journalist also will cover important energy-security and policy developments.
Your day-to-day:
- Provide strong coverage of China energy companies and projects, built on a solid foundation of original reporting, that will set Upstream apart from other publications
- Craft reliably sourced stories that are properly contextualised.
- Produce a weekly Upstream newsletter of curated Upstream articles and write for the newsletter.
- Report and write breaking news and other digital news for our digital platforms and special editions.
- Apply strong news judgement and reader metrics in choosing the best story angles to report, and in optimising those stories for digital reader engagement.
Your background:
- Reporting and writing experience.
- Experience in covering the energy sector is a plus
- Digital journalism skills and experience
- Demonstrated ability to break exclusive, high impact news.
- Energetic and self-driven
- Good communications
- Fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese, as well as English
We will consider applications even if you do not meet every single one of the above requirements, so do not be put off if you don’t match them perfectly!
