Upstream has an exciting opportunity to join our global news team as a North America Energy Correspondent, based in Houston, Texas.

Upstream provides exclusive insight into global oil and gas companies’ exploration and production, as well as the sector’s low-carbon energy projects.
It is a subscription-based news website with global distribution, providing robust independent journalism, exclusive insight and breaking news. It is one of several world-class publications owned by Oslo-based DN Media Group offering opportunities for advancement throughout the group’s global and Norwegian news teams.
We are looking for a standout journalist who is eager to play a significant role in the growth of Upstream, the leading global news title covering the oil & gas industry’s exploration, production and decarbonisation.
Your strategic role:
You will lead our coverage of energy companies and policy in the United States and Canada, along with some coverage of energy companies operating in other relevant beats. Key coverage priorities will include offshore exploration and development, shale oil and gas, the liquefied natural gas business, and energy and related services and technology companies. That includes examining the industry’s clean energy efforts, such as carbon capture and storage.
You will be part of the international Upstream news team and will have opportunities to travel. The new correspondent will enlighten our global readership about the transformation of North American energy companies as they reckon with climate change in a complex geopolitical context.
You will also have the opportunity to work on Upstream’s live and digital events.
And finally you will be need to be based in Houston, though working remotely, you will have strong support from Upstream’s global news team, and will report directly to Upstream’s Editor-in-Chief.
Your day-to-day:
- Deliver exclusive news, big-picture analytical coverage, features and commentary about leading energy companies' evolving energy strategies and projects.
- Help ensure Upstream Online is a must-read website by breaking news about the US, Canada and other nations' energy sectors and related technological innovation, politics, regulatory affairs and finance.
- Cover oil and gas companies' work in carbon capture and storage, renewable energy and other low-carbon energy projects for Upstream and its Accelerate Carbon Capture newsletter.
- Provide coverage for special editions, show dailies and major industry conferences.
- Some travel is required for this role.
Your background:
- All Upstream editorial staff are required to conduct themselves with the integrity, objectivity, dedication and professionalism becoming of a journalist working for a leading international industry publication.
- The successful candidate for this editing and reporting role will have the experience and skills to further enhance our energy coverage and improve our digital impact.
- Demonstrated ability to report and write exclusive news and to write breaking news quickly and accurately.
- Demonstrated drive and ability to work independently to produce original stories, build strong source networks and keep on top of the biggest developments in US energy news.
- Strong online news-reporting, feature-writing and people skills are essential.
- Knowledge and experience of the upstream oil and gas business are strongly preferred.
- Data journalism and other multimedia skills would also be welcomed.
- Hold a bachelor's degree at minimum.
