Come and join the team on a successful world-leading specialist business publication and be part of our next phase of growth.
We usually respond within a month
TradeWinds is the world’s authoritative source for news and insight about the dynamic, powerful and often opaque international shipping business. We have a reputation for clear and authoritative coverage of the people, companies and issues that drive a key global industry.
We are seeking an experienced reporter to be based in China and report on the country’s world-leading shipping, shipbuilding, ship finance and trade sectors. The role will be based in our Shanghai office, although we would consider other mainland locations.
The successful candidate will contribute high value news, markets insight and commentary as we expand our online publication for our large and growing subscriber base.
Recent years has seen shipping emerge from the shadows and onto front pages worldwide. The Trump trade upheavals, the wars in the Middle East, and Western sanctions against Russia have propelled shipping to the top of the global business and political agenda. And now, with pressure to cut carbon emissions mounting and technology set to revolutionise operations, maritime business faces a dynamic period of change.
We are looking for a creative, skilled and self-starting journalist able to report breaking news at speed with accuracy, and craft insightful and engaging interviews and features.
Experience of digital editing and publishing, and practical interpretation of analytics data will be an advantage.
Ability or aptitude to produce audio and video content will be welcomed, as would experience with live and online events.
Knowledge of shipping markets is not essential, although business reporting experience around trade, commodities, technology and finance would be an advantage.
Spoken and written Chinese language skills are essential, alongside the ability to write fluently in English.
Very competitive terms and conditions are on offer.
This job is open only to non-Chinese nationals.
Your day-to-day:
- Research and write a full range of business news, insight and commentary stories.
- Report with accuracy, to deadline and to appropriate length and style.
- Develop a network of relevant contacts across business, government, and civil society.
- Generate stories and contacts through travel to key industry events, press conferences and site visits.
- Take responsibility to assist editing and publishing when required.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of TradeWinds’ conferences and events.
- Promote TradeWinds material and activities through social media.
- Represent TradeWinds and DN Media Group Global in Mainland China.
Your background:
- Excellent news judgement and deep understanding of business issues to generate a strong file for our subscribers.
- A proven track record of generating compelling journalism in a fast-moving news environment.
- Ability to move between fast-moving breaking news and long-form features and interviews.
- A keen eye for detail, grammar, and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while taking guidance and direction from senior colleagues.
- Advanced digital skills and understanding of how to use digital tools to enhance reader experience and loyalty.
- Experience with multi-media, including video and audio, an advantage.
- Ability to work fast and accurately under pressure.
- Versatility and adaptability.
- Robust knowledge of journalism law.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Understanding of written and spoken Mandarin. Fluency advantageous, although training could be offered for the right candidate.
